Workshop: Writing Your Short Film

You’ve got the idea for the next award-winning cinematic masterpiece. Your acceptance speech is already tumbling around your subconscious. Now you just need to write the script. Award-winning novelist, screenwriter and filmmaker, Nicole Pouchet, offers a full-day hands-on workshop course on planning and writing your short film. With screenings, lectures, actual writing time, and valuable feedback, we’ll cover:

  • The power and impact of film

  • Notable short films

  • Using your logline to judge and revise your idea

  • Strategy - feature teaser/proof-of-concept, stand-alone, or festival fodder

  • Planning - locations, cast size, special effects, and time period

  • Structure/Story - 3-act structure, stakes, length of film

  • Characters - delving deep, emotional development

  • Your ideas - drafting time, group workshops, in-depth feedback

Join Women in Film for this instructional class at Hugo House. At the end of the full-day workshop, writers at any level will have had the opportunity to write and get feedback on the first draft of a short film. This class is open to EVERYONE (women, men, nonbinary) — join us!

About Nicole Pouchet
A former Broadway assistant director, Nicole Pouchet is a published novelist and produced screenwriter. She is the head writer for Zombie Orpheus Entertainment’s award-winning fantasy TV series, STROWLERS. Her horror/social thriller short, RETCH, premiered at the Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF) in 2019. She was thrilled to film her directorial debut, an episode of STROWLERS which she also wrote, in Copenhagen in 2019. Nicole continues to write/direct projects that incorporate social commentary into genre film.

Nicole is a Board Member for the Northwest Screenwriters Guild and a guest lecturer for the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business. She graduated from Duke University with a focus in Film & Video. Since selling her marketing agency in 2016, Nicole spends her hours trying to keep up with TV shows and raising two sons with her partner.
